BMHS Empowers Immigrant Communities to Overcome Job Market Challenges with Civil Service Job Application Support

Updated: Oct 7

The UK job market can be particularly challenging for immigrants, especially for those on graduate visas, who often face time constraints and pressure to secure permanent employment. To address these challenges, BMHS (BAME Mental Health Support) is dedicated to helping immigrants overcome barriers and navigate the complex job application process. Recently, BMHS hosted a Civil Service Job Application Session to equip immigrants with the tools and knowledge they need to successfully apply for positions within the UK civil service.

Pathways to Work: BMHS Provides Key Support for Immigrant Communities

As a leading mental health and community support organization in Swansea, BMHS offers vital resources to ethnic minority communities, enhancing their employability through two key strategies:

  1. Practical Experience: BMHS connects immigrants to internships, volunteer positions, and entry-level jobs, offering valuable work experience that helps them establish a foundation in the UK job market.

  2. Mentorship: Through mentorship programs, experienced professionals guide immigrants through their career journeys, offering advice, industry insights, and helping them build networks that open doors to future opportunities.

Breaking Barriers in Civil Service Job Applications

BMHS recently organized a session focused on civil service jobs, renowned for their inclusivity and commitment to diversity. This initiative aimed to help immigrants understand the application process, gain confidence, and break down the fear that often holds them back from pursuing roles for which they are qualified.

The session covered:

  • Navigating Application Platforms: Attendees were introduced to the Civil Service Jobs website and learned effective search strategies to find roles that align with their skills and interests.

  • Completing Application Forms: Detailed guidance was provided on filling out the application form accurately, with a focus on key sections such as personal details, employment history, and qualifications.

  • Competency Framework: Attendees were trained on how to effectively articulate their skills and experiences using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method, a crucial tool for civil service applications.

Overcoming the Fear of Applying

Recognizing that fear and uncertainty often discourage qualified immigrants from applying, BMHS emphasized the importance of understanding civil service success profiles and provided practical tips on how to approach the application process. A highlight of the session was a success story shared by a guest speaker, who detailed their journey from immigrant to civil service employee, inspiring attendees to pursue their goals with confidence.

Empowering Immigrants for Success

By the end of the session, attendees had gained a clearer understanding of the civil service application process and received one-on-one support from BMHS staff. This practical advice, paired with the organization's ongoing support, helped attendees feel empowered to take the next step in their job search journey.

Quote from Anum Mukhtar

“Through initiatives like these, we are bridging the gap for immigrants, not only by providing them with knowledge but also by helping them overcome the fears that hold them back. Our goal is to empower them to see the opportunities available and to succeed in the UK job market,” said Anum Mukhtar, the writer of the piece and guest speaker at the BMHS session.
