Join Our Writer Development Project (WDP)

A one-year creative writing project organized by BAME Mental Health Support (BMHS) sponsored by the Book Council of Wales and supported by Mind Cymru.

STRUCTURE

Monthly
Training Workshops

Through carefully developed and structured training sessions delivered by experts in all genres of writing, participants are expected to learn, develop and be able to produce their creative pieces which are publication standard. These sessions will be live (in person and virtual) to enhance better content assimilation through question-and-answer sessions with instructors. Sessions will be recorded to allow participants to always review lecture notes.

Weekly
Drop in Sessions

These sessions, which are held 3 times a month on Fridays from 5pm to 7 pm, are geared towards providing writers with the latest information about events in the creative writing industry, including ongoing writing competitions. These will run concurrently with the mentoring and coaching sessions.

Mentoring and Coaching Sessions

There will be weekly mentoring and coaching sessions to be facilitated by established and renowned authors/writers from BAME community in Wales. The sessions are designed to expose participants to various writers who write across different genres, and also give program participants the opportunity to ask the authors about their work, and how they navigated the writing world.

Become a Writing Mentor and Coach

Are you eager to support aspiring writers? Or perhaps you are looking for an opportunity to gain some mentoring experience. Look no further!

The Writers Development Project (WDP) will provide unique mentoring and coaching opportunities as it allows you to mentor individuals outside of your institution and possibly your country. BMHS is integrating a mentorship program into the Writers Development Project to assist young and aspiring writers in finding mentors in their chosen genre of writing.

Why You Should Sign-Up

As stated above, mentoring allows you to network with aspiring young writers and professionals who will one day be colleagues
Mentoring provides a service opportunity for you or your institution.
Mentoring allows you to meet new writers outside of your geographic area and possibly direct your area of writing interest.
It’s an opportunity to support diversity and inclusion, especially from the Black, Asian, and other Minority Ethnic groups.

Anybody can network and establish relationships with other attendees at the conference. However, sometimes making first contact can be daunting and it can be hard to find serious students. Participating as a mentor assures you, you’ll make the strong connections necessary to foster mentorship. If the fit is right, and you are willing, this can also serve as an opportunity to meet a long-term mentee.

There will be at least one large event during the project billed to hold in Cardiff. At this event, mentors will also meet with other mentees not directly assigned to them, and mentors involved in the program.

Expectations

Mentors will be required to:

Try to participate in a weekly group mentoring session (virtual or in person).
Be responsive and engaged with mentees.
Reach out to mentees first once match notifications are received.

Important Deadlines

Submission Deadline: December 15th, 2022.
Match Notification: Feb 20th, 2023
